I went back through the episodes for this season and looked at the statistics to find which episodes really stood out for you guys this year and thought I would share those so, if you really need a garden podcast fix this week you could jump back and listen to one of those. There was one surprise on the list that I will cover at the end and one all-time favorite, but first let’s look at the top 5 for 2024.
I will leave links to each of these episodes in the episode notes and it was also in this morning’s email for your convenience!

00:00:00
Surprise. I know I said we'd skip this
00:00:03
week, but I wanted to jump on and give you a little something
00:00:05
for this New Year's Eve. I went back through the episodes
00:00:09
for this season and looked at the statistics to find which
00:00:12
episodes really stood out for you guys this year and I thought
00:00:16
I would share those. So if you really need a garden
00:00:18
podcast fix this week, you can jump back in and you can listen
00:00:21
to one of those. There was one surprise on the
00:00:24
list that I will cover at the end and one all time favorite.
00:00:28
But first, let's look at the top five for 2024.
00:00:33
I will leave links to each of these episodes in the episode
00:00:36
notes, and it was also in this morning's e-mail for your
00:00:39
convenience #5 on the list of the most listened to episodes
00:00:44
released in 2024 was Starting Flower Seedlings Indoors episode
00:00:49
183 that was released back on February 6th.
00:00:53
This would be a really timely one to listen to as you're
00:00:56
preparing your garden plan for next season because we talked
00:00:59
about the easiest flowers to start from seed and those
00:01:03
special flower seeds, the ones that might need a little more
00:01:06
time and attention than our standard annuals.
00:01:08
So if there are specific flowers that you want to grow, but they
00:01:11
may need some extra steps, this episode clears some of that up.
00:01:15
We also went over your answers to the January question of the
00:01:19
month, asking what garden planning tools you all use.
00:01:22
So again, more timely information as we head into the
00:01:25
new year. Number four of the most popular
00:01:28
episodes of 2024 was maintaining fruit trees, bushes and canes.
00:01:33
That was episode 187, released on March 5th.
00:01:37
We talked all about the maintenance that needs to be
00:01:40
done on our fruit trees before they come out of dormancy in the
00:01:44
spring, and our bushes and arcanes and our brambles, which
00:01:47
is one of those tasks that can scratch the itch for getting out
00:01:51
into the garden when maybe it's still too early to really be
00:01:54
planting much. And they're tasks that are
00:01:56
important for us to be able to get the best yield possible from
00:01:59
those plants. And that can happen anytime
00:02:01
between late fall and early spring.
00:02:03
So if we get a really nice sunny winter day, we can take
00:02:07
advantage of that. And those tasks are things that
00:02:09
we can be doing. This also happened to be the
00:02:11
episode where we reviewed your answers to the February Question
00:02:15
of the Month about your most successful crop in the garden. 3
00:02:19
#3 The third most popular episode released in 2024 was
00:02:24
Different Ways to Grow Potatoes Episode 186 released on February
00:02:28
27th. A lot of gardeners don't have a
00:02:31
large space to dedicated to growing potatoes in ground in
00:02:35
like big long rows or don't have soil that is conducive to
00:02:39
growing underground crops that like it loose and loamy.
00:02:42
So we talked about all the different ways to grow potatoes,
00:02:45
even if you're in a short season area.
00:02:48
The wonderful thing about potatoes is you can harvest them
00:02:50
at just about any size. So we can still grow potatoes
00:02:54
and get a harvestable crop in really small spaces or in very
00:02:57
short seasons. And it's probably no coincidence
00:03:00
that the top episode from 23 was the full episode on growing
00:03:05
potatoes, which was episode 135. So I will leave a link to that
00:03:08
one in the show notes as well. 2 The second most popular episode
00:03:14
from the 2024 season of this podcast was Steps for Planning
00:03:18
the Fall Garden and Why You Should Grow 1 Episode 205
00:03:23
released on July 2nd. Yes, the middle of the summer is
00:03:27
the time to be planning for our fall garden.
00:03:30
And that's because we have to get seeds started or track down
00:03:34
starter plants and get the timing just right to get them to
00:03:38
maturity before our first frost in the fall or before our period
00:03:42
hits from the daylight hours drop lower than what's conducive
00:03:46
for plant growth. I will fully admit my fall
00:03:48
garden was a complete failure this year, and that was mostly
00:03:52
because the timing was just way off.
00:03:54
Not that I didn't plan appropriately, but the weather
00:03:58
just didn't give us any kind of break from the heat until much
00:04:02
later than usual, and I had no choice but to plant when it was
00:04:05
deathly hot outside. And most of those plants just
00:04:08
didn't survive because I couldn't baby them.
00:04:10
I had too much else going on. The ones that did survive did
00:04:13
great up until well past the first frost, and if I'd had more
00:04:17
time to focus on the fall garden, it probably would have
00:04:20
been fine. But it wasn't as much of A
00:04:22
priority for me this season as it was in previous ones,
00:04:24
especially because we were going to be out of town for some of
00:04:27
that time period. So no love lost on my end for
00:04:30
the Fall Garden and it was most definitely going to be a
00:04:33
priority again this year. If that's you, the link to this
00:04:36
episode will be in the show notes, even if you want to
00:04:39
bookmark it for later on in the season when it gets closer to
00:04:42
time for planning that fall garden.
00:04:44
But don't worry, I'll remind you one and drum roll, please.
00:04:50
The number one most popular episode from the 2024 season of
00:04:54
the Just Grow Something podcast was Growing Strawberries,
00:04:58
episode 194, released on April 23rd.
00:05:01
Small fruits like strawberries are really popular with home
00:05:04
gardeners because they're accessible.
00:05:05
They're much easier to grow and maintain than something like big
00:05:10
fruit trees or canes that can get out of control.
00:05:13
They don't take up as much space and strawberries don't have many
00:05:17
very specific requirements in terms of the soil like say
00:05:20
something like blueberries do. You can plant them in ground or
00:05:24
in containers, you can grow them in many different climates and
00:05:27
even a minimal effort in maintenance will improve the
00:05:30
yield dramatically. Strawberries are also great for
00:05:33
gardening with kids, especially teaching them how to wait for
00:05:36
something to ripen while also giving them some sort of quick
00:05:39
gratification. This was a full crop specific
00:05:42
episode with planting, growing and harvesting techniques, pests
00:05:47
and diseases, maintenance tips, all the things.
00:05:50
In fact, I was outside last week tending to our strawberry bed,
00:05:54
which was in desperate need of some cleanup and a little mulch
00:05:58
refresher. So strawberries are another
00:06:01
thing that can sort of scratch the gardening itch in the
00:06:03
offseason if you live somewhere with a cold winter climate.
00:06:08
So those were the top five episodes of 2024.
00:06:11
But I mentioned there was one honorable mention and one all
00:06:16
time favorite. When we look back at the overall
00:06:19
top episodes, these episodes were very popular and one of
00:06:23
them is so popular, it's in the top five twice.
00:06:28
So the honorable mention to the most popular episodes actually
00:06:32
comes in as number six of the most popular episodes of all
00:06:36
time. But it was released in season 2
00:06:39
of this podcast all the way back in 2022.
00:06:42
So that tells you how interested you all are in this topic.
00:06:45
If you're going all the way back to season 2.
00:06:48
And that episode was Introduction to Verma Composting
00:06:52
or Worm farming, that's episode 106 released in August of 2022.
00:06:57
If you're not familiar with what Verma compost is, it's the
00:07:01
product of earthworm digestion and the aerobic decomposition of
00:07:06
food waste materials by the microorganisms in the worm gut.
00:07:11
Yes, it is worm poop. OK.
00:07:13
Unlike a backyard compost pile, this process is all done at room
00:07:18
temperature, so it produces a very rich organic soil amendment
00:07:22
that contains plant nutrients and beneficial microorganisms
00:07:26
and they're called worm castings.
00:07:28
So episode 106 goes into exactly what happens in this process and
00:07:33
how we can create our own worm bins to harness the power of
00:07:37
worms to process our food waste into a fantastic garden
00:07:41
amendment with very little fuss, no mess, no smell and this can
00:07:45
all be done indoors. And finally, we have the overall
00:07:51
stand out episode. This episode actually aired
00:07:55
twice and both airings of that episode are in the top five of
00:08:01
all time most popular episodes of this podcast.
00:08:04
It aired the first time way back towards the beginning of season
00:08:08
2 in May of 2022. And then I replayed it in
00:08:13
December of 2023 as I counted down the top five episodes that
00:08:19
winter and this episode was in the number one spot.
00:08:23
So the original episode currently ranks as the fourth
00:08:26
most downloaded episode and the replay ranks as the fifth most
00:08:31
listened to episode. You all are really interested in
00:08:34
this topic and that is growing Peppers.
00:08:39
This was a crop specific episode where we dove deep into the
00:08:43
basics, the ethnobotany and the nutrition, growing practices,
00:08:47
pests, diseases, harvesting, storing, and all the things that
00:08:52
make Peppers so persnickety in the garden, including
00:08:55
information about how to grow them in short season areas.
00:08:58
So I will link to the original episode for your listening and
00:09:02
educational pleasure. So those are the top five
00:09:09
episodes for the 2024 season, plus a couple that are
00:09:12
considered all time favorites, specifically Peppers for sure.
00:09:16
If you have any recommendations for what I should cover next on
00:09:21
this show, I am actively seeking requests for episode topics.
00:09:25
I have been talking to you all for Four Seasons now about all
00:09:28
things gardening and food and farming, and I would love to
00:09:32
hear what else you would like me to cover or things you'd like me
00:09:37

00:09:41
perspective. This is your show and I want to
00:09:43
give you what you want. Happy New Year's Eve, y'all.
00:09:47
