The last couple weeks we’ve focused on selecting your fruit tree, preparing the soil and, finally, planting. Now it’s time to talk about maintaining that tree. Just like anything else in the garden, your fruit tree is going to give you a much greater harvest if you give it some attention. I will be the first to admit I am lousy at this. It’s not that I don’t know what to do and how to do it, it’s just that I don’t get around to doing it at the appropriate time. Some of my trees haven’t minded this at all and produced boatloads of fruit with no problem. My most recent trees, however, are suffering for it. It’s something I intend to fix, so not only will we talk about pruning and pest management in this episode, but I’ll share with you what I plan to do in my garden to be sure I’m out there doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done so I can finally get the harvests I want from my trees and maybe it will help you in maintaining your fruit tree.
