The temperature we put our plants into is just as important, if not more so, than the average air temperatures. Mulch goes a long way toward keeping that soil cool or helping it warm up, depending on our goal.

I prefer straw mulch because it allows water to filter through easily while slowing it down enough to allow it to soak in. Straw also helps keep weeds at bay, maintain soil moisture, and regulate soil temperature.
