New research from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health shows that childhood exposure to glyphosate is linked to liver inflammation and metabolic disorder in early adulthood, which could lead to liver cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease later in life.
Thousands of people have filed lawsuits against Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, and its parent company, Bayer, claiming that exposure to glyphosate caused them to develop cancer.
Levels of glyphosate found in our foods have always been within the Environmental Protection Agency’s "regulatory safe levels", but all the prior research was focused on cancer risk. What about liver and metabolic syndromes? Other health risks?
Today's episode explores new findings and continuing research in this area.

00:00:00
Welcome back my gardening friends to another focal point
00:00:02
Friday episode. Let's spend just a few minutes
00:00:05
together, reviewing a snippet of information, from a previous
00:00:08
episode, highlighting a new topic or quickly focusing on a
00:00:11
current event in the food and agriculture world.
00:00:14
Let's get down and dirty. If there was ever a time to be
00:00:19
an organic Gardener and understand where our food is
00:00:22
being grown and how its produced, its now
00:00:25
environmentalist and scientists have talked for years about the
00:00:27
possible side effects of glyphosate use, which is the
00:00:30
world's most widely used. Herbicide scientists have
00:00:34
speculated about the long-term effects.
00:00:36
It could have and only recently have we begun to see the studies
00:00:39
that are definitively showing these effects.
00:00:46
So, over the last ten years, a family medicine practitioner in
00:00:51
East Salinas, California began noticing something very strange
00:00:55
with his younger patients. Dr. Charles limbach had kids and
00:00:59
his practice between five and 15 years old showing elevated
00:01:04
levels of liver enzymes. This is a sign of liver
00:01:08
inflammation. So limbach ordered a full panel
00:01:11
of medical tests on each of his patients and he repeatedly.
00:01:14
Saw the same result fatty liver disease.
00:01:18
He said, when I trained in Family Medicine here in Salinas
00:01:21
about 30 years ago. Fatty liver was never even
00:01:23
mentioned. Now, 100 kids in his practice
00:01:28
have fatty liver disease which is characterized by excess fat
00:01:33
stored in the liver which can lead to long-term liver damage
00:01:37
so dr. Limbach had read a research
00:01:40
study out of UC San Diego. That showed a link between fatty
00:01:44
liver disease These in adults and exposure to glyphosate.
00:01:48
So this was cause enough for alarm and then he noted that
00:01:51
many of the kids in his practice ate cereal products from crops
00:01:55
that are treated with glyphosate.
00:02:01
Thousands of people have filed lawsuits against Monsanto, the
00:02:04
maker of Roundup and its parent company.
00:02:06
Bayer claiming that exposure to glyphosate, cause them to
00:02:09
develop cancer, especially Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma to some of
00:02:13
these lawsuits have resulted in Three large verdicts for the
00:02:16
plaintiffs others have been settled by bear the plaintiffs
00:02:19
allege that Monsanto failed to warn users of the carcinogenic
00:02:23
potential of the glyphosate which was classified as probably
00:02:27
carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization.
00:02:31
Of course, these lawsuits all resulted from adults using these
00:02:35
products in both professional and home environments and being
00:02:38
directly exposed but lab tests conducted by the environmental
00:02:43
working group which is a Profit advocacy group that specializes
00:02:47
in toxic chemicals and corporate accountability back in 2018
00:02:51
indicated that almost three-quarters of the 45 food,
00:02:55
products they tested contained levels of glyphosate, these
00:02:59
Foods included cereals, and other Foods marketed to
00:03:03
Children. Glyphosate is routinely used on
00:03:06
crops, like corn, soy wheat, oats barley, lagoons, and other
00:03:10
produce. So the fact that it's in our
00:03:12
food should be no surprise to anybody.
00:03:15
Through all the levels of glyphosate found in these Foods,
00:03:18
was within the epa's regulatory safe levels, were now seeing the
00:03:22
long-term effects of this exposure played out right in
00:03:25
front of us, new research, from the UC Berkeley School of Public
00:03:29
Health shows that childhood exposure to glyphosate is linked
00:03:33
to liver inflammation. And metabolic disorder in early
00:03:38
adulthood, which could lead to liver cancer, diabetes, and
00:03:42
cardiovascular disease later. In life.
00:03:49
So now we have the research that may be proving doctor Lim box,
00:03:53
suspicions about his patients and their exposure, Brenda
00:03:57
Eskenazi is the director of UC Berkeley's Center for
00:04:00
Environmental Research and Children's Health.
00:04:02
And her team used data, that she started Gathering way back in
00:04:07
2000. So from 2000 to 2002, the
00:04:10
researchers, enrolled pregnant women and babies into their
00:04:14
research from birth to age 18. Esca These team collected
00:04:20
hundreds of thousands of biological samples, health
00:04:24
records and glyphosate, exposure data from 480, mother-child
00:04:29
pairs. Now it's important to note that
00:04:31
these families lived in the Salinas Valley and it is
00:04:35
nicknamed America's salad bowl for a reason.
00:04:38
It produces nearly half of all of our lettuce here in the US.
00:04:42
It's a highly agricultural area. And of course glyphosate use in
00:04:47
that area has continued to climb Just like it has on the rest of
00:04:50
the world. So in their new study, the
00:04:52
researchers analyzed urine samples from the pregnant
00:04:56
mothers, and their children at ages 5, 14 and 18.
00:05:01
So the samples that were collected in 2000.
00:05:04
When the mothers were pregnant had non-detectable levels of
00:05:08
glyphosate and a MPA, which is a derivative of glyphosate, which
00:05:12
the researchers noted is consistent with the relatively
00:05:15
low use of glyphosate at that time.
00:05:18
But by 14 years of age, though. Many of the study participants
00:05:23
had measurable levels of glyphosate and a MPA in their
00:05:27
urine which was consistent with the rising Global glyphosate
00:05:31
application levels, high concentrations of glyphosate and
00:05:36
a MPA in the children's urine was linked to liver
00:05:39
inflammation, and metabolic syndrome.
00:05:42
By the time, they were 18 years old.
00:05:45
And even though the EPA says there's no evidence of human
00:05:48
health, ask most of the previous glyphosate research has been
00:05:52
focused on its potential for causing cancer.
00:05:55
This is the first time that researchers have examined the
00:05:59
potential connection between exposure to glyphosate early, in
00:06:02
life, and metabolic, and liver disease, both of which are
00:06:07
increasing among children and young adults Nationwide.
00:06:12
So Eskenazi and her team have plans to go deeper into this
00:06:16
investigation. The researchers have Also been
00:06:19
collecting Health Data on neurodevelopment.
00:06:22
Respiratory disease, hormones, puberty among other things in
00:06:27
the same population. They've already studied Eskenazi
00:06:30
said, and I quote, we need to follow up with the whole cohort
00:06:35
and see what associations we see, not only with metabolic
00:06:39
disease but other health outcomes as well.
00:06:49
Like I said, one more reason to be vigilant in what we grow,
00:06:54
what we buy and what we eat, we've got enough environmental
00:06:57
disturbances going on around us causing health problems.
00:07:00
We don't need our food. Especially the food.
00:07:03
We feed to our children, to be another cause, as always, if you
00:07:07
want to see the research for yourself, or maybe just read the
00:07:09
highlights. The links to all of my resources
